How Kinship Works

Kinship Revit add-in

Searching with Kinship's Revit add-in

The Kinship add-in gives you access to all your content from within Revit. You can search, browse and load families directly into your active model.

You can search all of content stored on your Kinship site, as well as content in your current model, directly from Revit by using the Kinship add-in. The add-in is available from the Add-Ins tab in the ribbon.

  • To start a search click on the Search icon in the Kinship panel or use the keyboard shortcut KL. This brings up the search box.

  • As soon as you start typing in the box Kinship will begin to search.

  • You can use the up arrow on your keyboard to scroll through previous searches.

  • If you are in a model with one element selected, the family type of that element will be automatically entered into the search box.

  • Kinship indexes a wide variety of data from the family including: - Family name - Version of Revit - Category

  • Kinship also indexes the parameters of the family and the following can be searched on directly: - Projectname - Typecomments - Description - Manufacturer - Model - Omniclasstitle - Hosted - Unitsystem

Browsing the Results

When showing results in the panel there are a couple of options to further refine the results.

  • Relevant filters are dynamically created which are displayed in blue below the search box. - Selecting one of these will apply that filter to the results. - When active a filter is displayed in green and the other filters are hidden. - Clicking on the filter again will deactivate it and display the other filters.

  • The More button on the right of the screen allows filtering on the type of hosting requirements that the family has. Clicking on it will display a dropdown menu of possible hosting options.

For each result there is:

  • A thumbnail image of the family (generated by Kinship).

  • The family name.

  • The category.

  • An icon showing the source of the family: - A blue cube for this model, another model in this project or a collection assigned to this project. - A green book for the library. - No icon if the family is in neither of the above. This means it is in a collection or model which is not assigned to the current project.

Loading Families into Revit from the add-in

  1. Select the family from the add-in search results to load it.

  2. The action taken when the family is loaded will depend on the currently active window in Revit: - If your active window is a model, then the family will be loaded into model and become the currently selected family so that you can immediately place it. - If your active window is the family editor or you have nothing open, then the family will be saved to your local drive and then opened in the family editor. - By default, Kinship will save the family in your Documents folder (“Copy and open family”). You can also choose to save the family in another location (“Copy it to another folder”).

  • The default save folder is the same for all versions of Revit. So if the same family is opened in different versions of Revit, you will need to choose either a different save location for each version or to overwrite the existing version.

Kinship webapp

Searching on Kinship's webapp

The global search page gives you access to all your content on the Kinship website. From the global search page you can search in the library, collections and models to see all of your content. The page provides a central point where content can be found, viewed, downloaded and managed.

The landing page is reached by clicking on the Search item on the top right of the main tabs. On entering the tab you will be presented with links to your recent searches or you can enter a new term in the search box.

Viewing Options

The results of the search are displayed in a table and can be shown in either a basic or detailed view by selecting the option on the right of the menu bar.

  • If there are more than 60 matches the first 60 results will be displayed with further being loaded as you scroll down through the list.

  • Clicking on a row will take you to the detail page for that family.

  • You can also get to the detail page by clicking the three-dots menu at the end of the row and choosing View Family.

Sorting and Filtering

You can order the results using the Sort by … dropdown menu. The sort will still apply in the Basic view if the element being sorted on is not visible.

  • A set of filters are provided across the top of the table that you can use to restrict the results shown.

  • Where appropriate, for example in supported Revit versions, you can select multiple values for the filter.
