Shadow diagrams for outdoor areas and facades

PreviousDaylightNextDaylight: Virtual sky component

Last updated 1 year ago

For thinking about quality and programming of different zones at different times of the day (direct sun, morning coffee, afternoon play, dinner grill, urban space, urban space that works for all seasons, etc.) the shadow diagrams help to assess the volumes and the urban space design.

Tips

Best practices can be found in the Byggforskserien :

Shadow diagrams can be generated in 2D or 3D and are set to critical dates and times. This visualization is often used to compare and evaluate design alternatives.

Instructions

1. Define or control the project location.

Go to Manage> Location.

Fill in the project Address or confirm that is correct.

2. Prepare the shadow diagram view template

Set up a view with the correct graphics, view range and visibility settings, this view can be used to create a view template that you can apply for all your shadow diagrams.

When using plan views apply an unlimited top and bottom in the view range to capture all the geometry in the project.

Create or control that you have a scope box that is suitable for the shadow diagrams.

3. Use the A-lab tool to automatically generate all the views.

4. Prepare the shadow diagram sheet template

Set up a sheet with the correct views you want to include on every drawing, this sheet can be used as a template to generate all your drawings.

May and June can not be placed on the same sheet as March. This is because Norway has daylight saving time.

THE DAYLIGHT SAVING TOOL IS A MANUAL CHECK IN REVIT. This means you have to check daylight saving time to print the sheets of Mai and June. And uncheck it to print the sheet of March.

To turn on and off daylight saving time, Go to Manage > Location and add/remove the check in Use Daulight Saving time:

If daylight saving time is not checked correctly before printing the shadows have a wrong angle (one hour less or more) .
