New Revit model

Last updated 3 months ago

With the introduction of Kinship content management, we have also made some fundamental changes to our Revit template.

  • First, we've cleaned up the file from all system and component families. The idea behind this is that you can load the families you need into your model from Kinship. This keeps the file small and performant.

  • Second, we've decided no longer provide a template. Instead, we have prepared a file that already has a Workshared environment. All recommended Worksets are already created - each Workset represents a building system (category of Bygningsdeltabellen NS3451). Of course you can reduce or expand them as needed.

Creating a Workshared Revit file doesn't just let multiple people work on it – you can also store it in Autodesk BIM360 or Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC). Plus, you'll be able to use Kinship with the file.

The essential change is now that you do not select a template file for a new project, but that you open the prepared file directly and save it with the prepared Worksets as a new central file in your project directory. You can also save the file without a Workshared environment. However, if you do this, all prepared Worksets will be removed.

As always, the template includes A-lab's and Keynotes, and has the export set-up for DWG and IFC deliveries included.

Workshared usage

Open Revit in the version agreed upon in the project. Navigate to the server and select the file. If you want to keep the Workshared environment and Worksets, you do not need to do anything. If you want to remove the Worksets and create a file without a Workshared environment, please see .

File location: U:\BIM-Revit\A-lab ContentManagement\TEMPLATE

A dialog box will appear showing an overview of the prepared Worksets. You do not need to do anything here. Click OK to continue.

The file was created in Revit 2022 for maximum compatibility. If Revit 2023 or later has been agreed upon in the project, you will see an update window and a compatibility notice when you open the file. You do not need to do anything here. Click Close to continue.

Now, follow these steps to complete the process: Select your project directory with Save as and name the file according to the BIM-manual. Before you save, make sure that you have checked the box next to Make this a Central Model after save under Options...

Click Save to save the file. Revit will automatically place you in the ALAB_TEMP Workset.

Non-workshared usage

To remove all prepared Worksets and the Workshared environment, follow these steps: Open Revit with the version agreed upon in the project. Navigate to the server and select the file. Check the box next to Detach from Central before opening the file.

File location: U:\BIM-Revit\A-lab ContentManagement\TEMPLATE

You will see a list of the contained Worksets. No worries, these will be automatically removed. Click OK to continue.

Revit will now display a warning about the Worksets. Since you do not want to keep them, click Detach and discard worksets to continue.

The file was created in Revit 2022 for maximum compatibility. If Revit 2023 or later has been agreed upon in the project, you will see an update window. After processing, select your project directory with Save as and name the file according to the BIM-manual. Before you save, you may double-check that the box next to Make this a Central Model after save under Options... is not selectable.

Click Save to save the file. No Workset is selected.

Add families from the library

We're working on creating standard packages in Kinship for each project phase. These will include common walls, windows, doors, etc. for your skisseprosjekt, forprosjekt, and detaljprosjekt. This means you'll soon be able to load just one package from Kinship into Revit and immediately start working with the basic elements. You can, of course, continue to load more specialized object families from Kinship into your model as the project progresses.

Now that the file has been created (Workshared or non-Workshared), you still need to add the required families. As we explained at the beginning, all families have been removed from the Revit file to keep it small and performant. This also works very simply with our Content Management Kinship. You can find everything you need to know .

If you want to import data from another project, that's also very easy. Use for this.
